What is Growth Mindset?

Growth Mindset is a way of thinking. It equips children and adults with the positivity, confidence and resilience in order to take responsibility for their own wellbeing in terms of success and happiness. Negative beliefs prevent growth in so many people, they also create anxiety and stress. Growth Mindset has the power to change the whole way staff and children think and learn.

What does having a Growth Mindset Achieve?

  • Ensures that learning and improving ourselves is at the heart of everything we do

  • Develops resilience in teachers and students

  • Improves results and attitudes

  • Improves wellbeing

  • Ensure ‘outstanding’ learning through positive thinking skills

Growth Mindset is a simple idea which, put regularly into practice has incredible results on learning and wellbeing. With a growth mindset, people believe that their basic qualities can be developed through dedication and hard work – that effort is the path to mastery. This view creates a love of learning and a resilience that is essential for lifelong success. Teaching about growth mindset creates motivation and raises achievement in the classroom and the staffroom and what’s more children take this new way of thinking home, impacting on the wider family. It really does have a ripple effect!

How is Growth Mindset Taught?

The aim is that Growth Mindset becomes a belief, a part of your everyday thinking. The understanding that your brain and talent alone do not result in success. These are the main areas of teaching;

  • To learn about the brain, how it can either help us to grow or limit our success and happiness in life

  • To recognise that focusing on the process, not outcomes is what fosters self-esteem and progress

  • To never be afraid of failure. Looking at how mistakes and failure help us to grow

  • To recognise that our own inner voice has the power to make or break us
